The best way to learn about astronomy is to do astronomy. If you go out in your back yard or a park or somewhere else away from bright lights and look up you're doing astronomy! If you take a bit of time to learn a few things about the night sky you'll find that there is much more than just stars up there. There are also planets, comets, asteroids and galaxies as well as beautiful nebulae where stars are being born and others where dying stars are giving up the heavy elements they've spent their lives manufacturing from interstellar hydrogen. Some stars end their existence in a spectacular bang, called a nova, while others simply cease burning and produce beautiful planetary nebulae. There are so many objects in the night sky and so many things to learn about each one. These days there is no shortage of information on the internet but it can be hard to know where to start. While all three programs can be downloaded by anyone who is interested, only the Beginners Certificate does not require paid membership in the North Bay Astronomy Club. Messier and Chapman 100 Certificates will only be awarded to members in good standing (there has to be some benefits of membership). If you are interested in completing any of these programs simply download the instructions and object list(s) by clicking on the applicable button(s) below. For help locating and identifying the items on each list we reccommend: This is where we come in. Our club library has lots of useful books and other resources and we have a number of loaner telescopes available. Also, many of our members are delighted to help out with both equipment and information/guidance. Come to some of our meetings and get aquainted. Good luck and happy hunting! |
